How to organise a beach clean-up: a practical checklist
A beach clean-up is one of the simplest ways for a group of friends to make a visible difference. In a few hours you can remove waste that would otherwise wash back into the sea, and the result is easy to see: a cleaner beach, a pile of full bags and a group of tired, happy people.
A good clean-up still needs planning. This checklist covers what to think about before, during and after the day.
Before the day
Choose the beach and visit it
Pick a beach that the group can reach easily, and visit it beforehand if you can. Look at how much waste there is, where it gathers, where people can park and where the collected bags can be left for pickup. Note any hazards, such as rocks, strong currents or areas that are unsafe at high tide.
Check the tide and the weather
Low tide exposes more of the beach and makes it safer to work near the water. Check the tide times and the weather forecast for your date, and plan the clean-up for the cooler part of the day, early morning or late afternoon.
Talk to the right people
Contact the local authority responsible for the beach before the event. They can tell you whether permission is needed and, just as importantly, may be able to arrange collection of the waste you gather. Nearby hotels, fishing communities and businesses are often happy to help, whether with water, storage or simply spreading the word.
Gather equipment
For each volunteer, plan for:
- Gloves, preferably reusable and thick enough to handle sharp objects
- Bags, ideally separate ones for plastics, glass and general waste
- Drinking water, in refillable bottles if possible
- Sun protection: hats and sunscreen
For the group as a whole, bring a first aid kit, a container for sharp items such as broken glass and needles, and a few buckets or sacks for heavier items.
Invite people and set expectations
Tell volunteers when and where to meet, what to wear (closed shoes, light clothing, a hat) and what to bring. Share how long the event will last. People are more likely to come, and to come back, when they know exactly what to expect.
On the day
Start with a short briefing
Before anyone picks up a bag, spend five minutes on the essentials:
- Safety first. Never pick up sharp objects, needles or unknown containers with your hands. Report them to the organiser.
- Stay away from the water's edge in rough conditions, and do not move heavy objects alone.
- Leave nature alone. Do not disturb nesting areas, turtles or other wildlife, and leave shells, driftwood and seaweed where they are.
- Stay hydrated and take breaks in the shade.
Work in small teams
Divide the beach into sections and send small groups to each one. Teams make the work more social, make sure no area is missed, and mean that someone is always nearby if help is needed.
Record what you find
Counting what you collect is more useful than it sounds. A simple tally of plastic bottles, bags, fishing nets, food wrappers and cigarette butts shows where the waste comes from, and helps you explain the problem to others. Photos of the beach before and after are also powerful when sharing the results.
After the clean-up
Dispose of the waste properly
Collecting waste is only half the job. Make sure the bags reach the collection point you arranged with the local authority, and separate recyclables where facilities exist. Never leave bags on the beach overnight, where animals or the tide can scatter them again.
Thank everyone and share the results
Thank your volunteers and share what the group achieved: the number of bags, the most common items found and the before-and-after photos. Recognition is one of the main reasons people volunteer again.
Make it a habit
A single clean-up makes a difference for a day. Regular clean-ups change how a community treats its beach. Once you have organised one, the next is much easier: you already know the site, the contacts and the volunteers.
